Glycan Biosciences has taken its inspiration from natural products to develop novel pharmaceuticals based on particular sugar (carbohydrate) structures. The new drugs are inspired by the naturally occurring carbohydrates known as glycosaminoglycans, or GAGs. Very recent technological advances have revealed the chemical structures of these sugars and their enormous biological importance. An opportunity now exists to utilise the large structural diversity of GAGs in drug discovery programs.
Glycan Biosciences with its Biological Analyses and Carbohydrate Chemistry Sections is uniquely positioned to capitalise on this opportunity to produce new types of drugs that are user-friendly, effective and provide therapy solutions for a number of difficult to treat diseases.
The Company has developed an innovative proprietary carbohydrate drug development platform and has synthesised a library of compounds which mimic the natural GAG structures. A number of these compounds are currently under development for the respiratory diseases market, the first diseases targeted being allergic rhinitis and asthma.
